Artist Statement

Irony is typically thought of as something lighthearted or humorous. However, I decided to take a more serious approach to this word. When brainstorming for this photo, I started by thinking about concepts that are contradictory and settled on the idea of freedom versus oppression.  America was built upon the principles of freedom and equality yet some citizens in this country are still without those basic rights. People face unequal treatment based on the color of their skin, religion, or gender and that is something that needs to be fixed in this country. My goal is for people to look at this photo and be motivated to help others attain these rights.

This idea of the irony of freedom in America within my photo is shown through the use of symbolism. The flag in the background represents the American people and the principles that govern this country. The tape over the characters mouth shows how people are restricted from some of these fundamental rights such as the freedom of speech. Also, I chose to have the character stare directly at the camera to make it seem like she is looking the viewer in the eye. The shadow behind the girl adds to the seriousness of the photo. All of these elements help to clearly show the idea of irony of American freedom.

This photo ended up being one of my favorites for the List. It has a powerful message behind it and was executed better than I had hoped.
