I have always found language and the power of words to be fascinating. Language is how people communicate and it connects people from all over the world. When brainstorming for my photo I began thinking more about the power of nonverbal language as well. This includes people’s facial expressions, gestures, as well as sign language. Currently, around 1 in 20 Americans are currently deaf or hard of hearing. This means that people’s unspoken language is more important than one might think.

My final photo is a combination of five photos with hands signing the word “power.” My goal was for the viewers eyes travel from left to right as they try to interpret what is being spelled out. The photo is in black and white so the shape of the hands is more defined. This photo represents my fascination of the power of words in a way that is very different than I had first envisioned. I had initially wanted to shoot a long exposure of a hand signing but then I realized it would be hard for the viewer to determine what word is being spelled out.

Overall I am happy with how this photo turned out because it looks unique and represents my interest in the power of language. I have family members who are hard of hearing so this photo is even more personal to me.
